Long time no post.

It has just been a crazy couple months.

Among other things, I have been busy with two groups creating prayer/comfort shawls.

Well, here they are --- and I love them --- Meg's is such a beautiful rich brown and mine a lovely black. What great hats these are --- I must admit my Black Dog tee shirt doesn't exactly match the elegance of the hat, but it was hot today --- and I am anxious to show you how lovely they turned out. Anyone in the Elgin area wanting to take a class with Jill send me an email

Rivendell Alpaca farm -- Wet felting hats class

What a wonderful day.

A visit with the alpacas, a delightful gourmet lunch prepared by Gordon, and then down to the business of making our felt hats from the wool of the alpaca. Anyone wanting to spend a very special day learning to wet felt a hat contact Jill at Rivendell Alpaca Farm. Jill is delightful, knowledgeable and an excellent teacher. One of the best classes I have taken. My niece, Meg, was able to take the class with me and it was wonderful spending the day with her. Jan was the third student and what a delightful lady. I will post a few photos -- for the most part, I was having far too good a time "visiting" the Alpaca (and one guardian Llama), eating a wonderful lunch, and up to my elbows in soap suds to do much picture taking -- the hats are drying and as soon as possible, I will post photos of the finished pieces.

I must say, not every one has a hat made with fur of an animal they have "met". Meg's hat is from Cecile (she is the close up photo of the brown alpaca) and mine from Boris (close up photo of the black alpaca). What fun.

Tomorrow these shawls will begin their journey to hopefully wrap someone in love and prayers.

I hope whoever receives them will feel the

love put into each stitch.

The red one is different than the earlier pictured similar one. This is a cherry red while the other one is a red brick color.

Finished Lattice Work Shawl + two More

This shawl is made with regular worsted weight (4 ply) yarn. Only about 1/2 the cost of making one with the lovely Lion Brand Homespun yarn --- this was made with Caron "by the pound" yarn (see photo below) and used up the whole one pound of yarn for a cost of about $7.00 total. I will try a few other yarns and patterns to try to keep the cost down.

I was able to put the finishing touches on two more shawls -- hard to photograph the true colors, but there are both very pretty colors. The one without fringe would be most appropriate for a man -- in lovely desert colors and no fringe. The cotton candy parfait color is

really much prettier than the photo shows.

Boy, the time flies by.

I do stay busy -- with lots of things -- lately, crocheting has been my main "crafty" thing to do. Lots of prayer shawls finished --- photos of a couple more I have finished -- and a pic of the pink one I am working on right now. It is a different pattern and fun to do. I have it about half way finished.

Also I worked on "pocket prayer" shawls. These are mini-shawls.

I think by the time I quit for a bit, there were 75 of them in all.
Most have been gifted already.

Three more finished shawls -- love the pink parfait yarn that Lynn S. sent to me. It made up a gorgeous shawl and was sent to a lovely lady who is undergoing chemo .

Cool blues, lavendar, touch of pink -- very soothing colors.

The red is a bit unusual, but everyone needs a splash of color.

Yes, I am still around --- just been super busy these last months --- to see some of the things I have been doing you can CLICK HERE.

We also went on a long weekend trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to meet with a group that we have met with almost every April since 1982. These are wonderful friends, and the group meets in different places every year.

In the past we have met in Connecticut, Missouri, Indiana, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, California, Virginia, Nebraska, Tennessee. Texas, Iowa and repeated states but different cities. In 2012 it is to be in Nevada.

What a treasure these friends are :-)

Prayer Shawl Crochet Class

Yesterday I finished giving the second crochet class at one of our local hospitals. What a great way to spend an afternoon -- we had 10 at the first class and 12 at the second. I am so looking forward to seeing the completed prayer shawls these wonderful woman are creating. These all will be for distribution to patients and family of patients -- this particular class was made up of women donating their time for the comfort and pleasure of others -- what a wonderful group of people. My friend since kindergarten ( for those of you counting, LOL, that is 70 years since kindergarten) Barb and I work well together and the classes really went quite well. Hope to post photos of the ladies completed shawls in the coming month. We have received donations of yarn -- we use the Lion Brand Homespun yarn -- and each shawl takes 3 skeins so yarn donations are appreciated -- another woman who had received a shawl for comfort when her husband passed away -- gave a large cash donation to purchase yarn so others could share the wonderful experience of feeling a warm, soft, comforting -- shawl -- each shawl is made with so much love and a prayer that who ever receives it will be comforted just feeling the shawl wrapped around their shoulders.

Here are 5 more finished scarves -- the super soft yarn is a delight to work with.

I started making these cute designer scarves. Very soft and warm and colorful

Have 5 different colors to work with.

Here's a pic of how I wind it onto my yarn winder and then use it FROM THE WINDER -- since this is a really quick project there is no problem in using the winder in this manner. The yarn pulls off easily and in lengths you want to use. And this sure saves the frustration of having it tangle all the time.
Hope this will help a bit.

Tonight was the 3 youngest grandsons Christmas concert. It was a beautiful night -- the children, the music, and while driving home a light snow that just put a lovely end to a wonderful evening.

I'm finishing up some of the projects from 2010 and looking forward to doing some beading projects in the near future. I will always keep some crochet projects close at hand -- most will be for the comfort/prayer shawl program at the hospital and also chemo caps. Here are the three shawls I am currently working on. They are a simple repeat pattern -- easy and relatively fast to do and still producing a wonderfully soft and warm shawl (I especially like Lion Brand Homespun yarn for these shawls). The Lavender (top left) and the Montana Sky (top right) just need the fringe applied. The pink is about 1/3 finished and the yellow is yet to be started.

Our first "lasting" snow of the year. Love that "first" one -- it is so clean and beautiful. Our Lab, Polly, loves it too -- here she is looking back at me thru the door and asking "Hey, Mom, won't you come out and play with me?" ~~~~ I did ~~~~ and we both loved it.

A prayer shawl finished. Friend, Barb, and three of her book club friends furnished the yarn for this prayer shawl -- I crocheted it -- this coming week Barb will find a "home" for it. The "model" is rather short, so the shawl won't be as long on most people ;-)

Also finished more adult size caps. Now working on a few family gifts and then will get back to shawls and caps and baby bonnets.

Also did a few more baby caps for the hospital. As soon as I know if the pattern for the newborn babies is OK I will do up more. Fortunately you can get several out of one skein of yarn. If anyone has any simple crochet baby hat patterns I would love them. It is always great to have different patterns to use.

On Thursday evening went to see Shrek the Musical onstage at the Cadillac Theater in Chicago. What a nice evening with daughter and two youngest grandsons.

From 7 to 70+ it was a night to remember.

Halos of Hope

While at the Midwest Fiber and Folk Art Fair visited at the Northern Illinois Chapter of The Crochet Guild of America. One of their projects is Halos of Hope. Now, this is something I can easily do -- and I always have some yarn at the house, so last night I set about locating a pattern and ended up with the one pictured. This goes quickly and is an enjoyable, simple, pattern to do. I have five finished now of this pattern and hope to turn them in to the Halos of Hope group at the Stitches Midwest show in a couple weeks. If I don't make it to the show I have local options also.

Yarn Ball Winder & Yarn Swift

Received my Yarn Ball Winder from KnitPicks today -- it is great - I used it with a very reasonably priced Yarn Swift that I got off eBay ( eBay #280488065848) and in no time, I

had a wonderful, neat, pull out ball of yarn.

I had a lot of fun using the "stick" (Nostepinde) to wind yarn balls, but my wrists began to ache -- so the Ball Winder is a very welcome addition.

New Plum Scarf Begun....

The gray lace crochet scarf (see previous post) was fun to do .... so since I had some lovely Plum colored yarn from Knit Picks, decided to begin another scarf. Depending on your monitor, the plum color is fairly true and I love it.

Last night I worked some more on the Lace Scarf -- it is now 38 inches long and just about ready to begin work on the second half. Need to attach to "top" neck area and work the other half in the opposite direction. A very light weight, airy, scarf.

I have managed to add about 12 inches since this photo was taken. I hope to have time in the next few days to get this scarf finished. It is turning out very nice -- will be hard to "gift" this one -- may just have to keep it

for myself LOL. But, I did received a lovely yarn order from Knit Picks

so will be able to start another as soon as I want. Forest green, plum or a gorgeous variegated purple.

... Another new project - I began this last night --- about 5 inches of the projected 84 inches --- the 3 terrific hooks are the different size hooks used on this lacy scarf. It feels very delicate in the sock weight yarn...

Today I also received my first yarn order from KnitPicks -- I am very pleased with the color, quality and price of the yarn. Shipping was prompt and I know I will order from them again. This lovely yarn is 'gently' variegated. It is a fingering weight Merino wool with nylon. This will be made into a light weight, yet warm, lace shawl.

I am so excited and thrilled.

For a long time I have wanted to learn how to spin ...

now, hopefully, I will be able to learn.

My new addition is an Ashford "Joy" Spinning Wheel

It is beautiful, folds up and fits in it's own travel bag to go where ever I go.

What a fun few days.

FedEx brought a package, compliments of dear friend Lynn. The darling sheep is a tape measure, three fantastic buttons (she knows my love of different buttons) and a absolutely fantastic necklace that she made for me. WOW, with friends like this, life is good.

Also I spent time using my new N crochet hook from Wolfenwoods --it is a dream to work with -- and I have a good start on a new shawl in the basket weave pattern.

Last night was grandsons concert at his school. The theme was Broadway Musicals -- he did great in his classes song and dance routine -- then, just as I was leaving their home for Elgin, he asked me for a dance -- we have done this before and it is always such a delight -- the photo was after we finished the dance, just saying "Thank you for the dance". Isn't it wonderful? I KNOW how lucky I am with my 7 grandsons -- they are all so precious and special -- and to have photos like this one keeps the memories alive for us all. Thanks, Aim for the photo ( It is wonderful having a photographer daughter to catch these special moments) - thanks C-man for the dance. Love you all. I am having fun with my beautiful new crochet hooks -- completed 2 shawls -- each is 72+ inches in length -- and the red shawl/cape is almost done -- 5 more decorative shell rows and then the edging -- all these were made (being made) with my wonderful new hand made wooden crochet hooks -- they are so wonderful to work with

Yesterday daughter, Amy, treated me and Cindy, her mother-in-law to the most wonderful afternoon. We all attended a matinee performance of Billy Elliot the Musical at the

Oriental Theater in Chicago, IL.

What a talented group this is. We were blessed to see Giuseppe Bausilio as Billy. This was his first time in the starring role and what a talent he is -- his personality and performance capture the audience. Later we all had a wonderful family dinner. Delightful day.

I'm Back.................. :-)

The last few weeks have been long and stressful. Thanks to all my family and friends for words of encouragement. Now I hope to be back to "things as usual".

During the past month+ I have kept head and hands busy -- albeit with very simple projects -- the idea was to stay occupied with the familiar. Here's a bit of what I did. A few more pot holders and seven of the nine little cell phone bags -- I chose bright, cheery colors -- the bags are just large enough to hold a cell phone, driver's license, credit card -- the idea being something simple to grab on the way out the door and yet not cumbersome. There is a button on each with a loop for fastening -- just to be sure the cell phone doesn't slip out. All of these pieces are made from 100% cotton yarn -- and each takes less
than one ball of yarn.

CRAZY SHORTCUT QUILTS

Came across this lovely book and I just had to have it.

I am so glad I ordered it -- Marguerita McManus and daughter Sarah Raffuse have published a wonderful

book -- it is easy to understand -- clear directions and as a big plus, they also have wonderful video tutorials accessible on the internet -- I can hardly wait to finish up a few small projects so I will be able to work on one of the quilts described in the book.

I will try to share the process with you all and if you have made a quilt from the book would love to hear from you and see photos of your quilt.

Was doing some research on the Arts & Crafts movement this morning for DH. I came across the following quote I think will be enjoyed by all my "handy" friends. The Stickley brothers and Roycroft are major names in the A & C movement in the USA. This quotation from John Ruskin formed the Roycroft "creed":

Cold Nights, Warm Quilt

What better project for the cold winter than a nice warm quilt? I've long admired a quilt that is frequently seen on my favorite TV sit com, As Time Goes By. So here is the beginning of my version of that lovely PinWheel pattern quilt.

The blocks are not pieced together yet -- just laying there -- more blocks to finish before deciding the final layout.

The top is moving along nicely -- I'm amazed since so far all of it is hand pieced.

Today's mail brought two wonderful photos.
First, grandson Luke's high school graduation photo.
Luke is #3 grandson -- 2 older, 4 younger.
He can't possibly be that old --- but what a handsome young man he is.

Also, a Christmas photo from Lego Land in California. All decked out for the holidays, musician daughter Steph and her good friend Bill took a minute to have a photo taken between playing their lovely music.

Any of you who are familiar with Cribbage know what a great hand this is.
The best hand you can get is a score of 29 -- this hand scores 28 -- if the queen were any of the jacks it would have been a perfect 29 hand.

Today brought some snow -- I usually have old sheets on the laundry room floor so the dogs don't drag in lots of mud -- that means washing the sheets frequently -- and Polly, our wonderful black lab, has discovered that sheets just from the dryer are warm and cozy and just waits to have one draped over her.

I don't know how I got on "By-gone Days Road" today --- oh, yes, I do remember. I was looking at Maggie's BLOG and saw a link to rug hooking -- that reminded me of all the fun I had hooking rugs a few years ago -- and of all the wonderful Hooking Friends I made and still have. I wish there were more hours to a day -- don't we all? -- there are so many things I would still like to be working on -- may just have to pick up the 2-3 UFO rugs and work on them again. Oh my gosh, I can't believe it is almost a month since I posted here on my blog. The time has flown by -- Thanksgiving has come and gone (and a wonderful one it was too) -- several birthdays have been celebrated and youngest grandson celebrates his birthday on the 11th. Then it will be Christmas -- and in case I don't get back here until after the first of the year, thank you all for your visits and the comments you have left and emails sent to me -- I truly appreciate hearing from you all and am sending my best wishes for a wonderful Christmas for each of you and your families -- I will do better here after the first of the year. In the meantime, here's a picture of Polly and Munchkin -- that was the day before the lab, Polly, found a tiny opening in the zipper, pulled out all the foam rubber padding and shredded it into tiny bits -- well, it did make a cute photo :-)

Here is the bag -- I'm not sure I like the size of the I-cord for the "strap" so will experiment with smaller size DPN's and see if I like that better. The solid blue yarn felted beautifully but the multi not as well -- but it looks pretty good anyway. Fun to do.

Favorite LYS not really so "local".......

My favorite LYS is really not so "local" -- Most of you know I make trips to the "city" a couple times a month -- I usually go 1/2 to 1 hour early because my destination is close to my favorite LYS -- albeit, "local" in this case is over 40 miles away. Matters not -- a trip to Sister Arts Studio is always a delight. These pictures were just taken with my phone, but wanted to share my favorite place with you. You will see some of Rebecca Danger's delightful monsters in the window (see previous post) -- and if you look closely, you will see Donna in one of the photos. Alberta the Happy Little Monster

Alberta, the happy little monster is finished. She is my first little monster (of the knitted variety, LOL). She "sits" about 8 inches tall and was made from a pattern by Rebecca Danger called Albert the Absent Minded Monster -- but with the pinks in mine I named her Alberta. ALBERTA ~ The Happy Little Monster
Ouch, I'm getting squashed under here -- is it really necessary to do this just to hold my mouth on -- my eyes are popping out with the pressure -- well, tomorrow I should be able to appear here all done -- it is rather embarrassing this way :-)

GETTING READY TO HEAD SOUTH ~~~~~

Yesterday the birds took over the spruce in the back yard --there were hundreds of them in there -- getting ready for their trip south. This is the first time ever I have seen them in that tree going crazy. There were Cedar Waxwings, Robins, Cardinals, Chickadees and a few others. Mostly you can see the Cedar Waxwings in this photo -- but if you look close at the upper right you can see a Cardinal. They were all so lovely.

Today I met up with DD, DSIL and 4 DGS at our local Pumpkin Farm. It was a gorgeous afternoon, and if you check out the slide show, you will see all the fun things we were able to do in one afternoon. One of the most fun things was standing "face to face" with a beautiful giraffe and having him eat oh so gently from our hands. What a thrill. Silky soft Alpaca toy -- and a skein of alpaca yarn. This will be the first time I have knit anything with yarn from an animal I have "met" in person. Thank you, Primrose She is a sweetie.

Grandson Drew and I had a fun afternoon checking out the local Alpaca Farms. It was a gorgeous afternoon -- sunny, cool and VERY windy. These are wonderful animals and we had such a great time visiting with all the people there. We had fun walking KING ELROND. He is just a little over a year old) on a leash. If you click on his name you will find photos of him before he was sheared. What a lovely fluff ball. The sound the Alpacas make is so soft and gentle coming from a fairly large animal. I fell in love --- now I want to learn how to card and spin and all those good things.

Adult size: 4-5 feet at the head, 30-38 inches at the shoulder, weighing 105-185 pounds

The two youngest grandsons are here for a few days. Friday we went to Hobby Lobby -- each with a discount coupon in hand -- the boys each picked out a skein of yarn for a new hat -- so that night I quick crocheted them their hats -- good thing too, as when we went to leave for a flea market early Saturday morning it was really "cold" and they both donned their new hats. This pic is of them at 7 AM Saturday, still in pj's -- trying on the hats.

Well. the new roof is on -- just a bit of trim and clean up and then that will be finished. We had a very heavy rain yesterday and all was dry. Whew -- what a relief.

Today begins the re-roofing process. First all the old has to come off (see photo). It is very noisy in the house with 5 men and tools up on the roof. Then there will be the hammering when the new roof gets put on. Oh, my poor head LOL.

Ever know anyone who flits between projects like I do?????
I guess I want to try it all and feel I have to hurry to get even a small part of what I'd like to try done -- there are soooo many things and the time goes by so fast.
OK, I know the heat index the last couple has been at or near 100 degrees --so what am I doing making socks/slippers????? Who knows? It is just something I felt like doing. Here is a photo of what I have done the last couple days. Two pair finished and a good start on the first sock in cranberry red tweed. They are going to be so snugly warm on cold winter days.

Today is the 50th anniversary of my Dad's death
My niece, Sharry, hung the casket flag - the first time it has been unfolded, and set out a photo of Dad and Mom
The little note says:
Remembering
Webster W. Blazier
Jan. 16, 1887 ~ July 24, 1959

Thank you, Sharry -- I know Grandpa would be thrilled that you honored him today.

Take note, the flag has 48 stars, this was before Alaska and Hawaii became our 49th and 50th states.

Start of #2 Biscornu

Finished the top of this biscornu. I think it will be quite nice when when the bottom is stitched in place -- the way the two pieces are stitched together makes a wonderful looking piece.

A little more progress. Have to get this done -- friend Shari has designed a wonderful pansy biscornu that I am so anxious to stitch.
A few hours later and more done. Central portion complete -- now to do the rest. I like the way this is working up.

My first biscornu is finished except for the button -- I'm going to a quilt show this afternoon and may find what I am looking for there -- if not, I have an idea to use a stork scissor charm center top. The stitching of the two pieces together went much easier than I thought it would -- a sweet little pin cushion.

The top is finished. Amazing how long the back stitching takes. Have to be sure the backstitch is absolutely square. Now to backstitch the back piece -- the two back stitching lines are used to piece the two pieces together so once again, the measurements must be accurate.
